ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Nine kilometres northwest of Umag, the coast ends at Savudrija — a rocky cape with Croatia’s oldest lighthouse, lit since 1818 and the country’s northwesternmost point. The white tower stands alone above the low rocks, a small restaurant beside it, and the open sea on three sides; at the fence line beyond, the border with Slovenia runs into the water.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The lighthouse was built by the Austrians in 1818 — the first on the eastern Adriatic — and carries its own legend: the keeper’s bride is said to be buried beneath the tower, the reason the light is said to be haunted. Its flame has burned through the Austrian, Italian, Yugoslav and Croatian eras without a break in service; it remains Croatia’s northernmost coastal light and still guides traffic toward the ports of the northern Adriatic.
