ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Stella Maris is Umag’s resort coast — bays, beaches and hotel compounds three kilometres north of the old town — and its centre of gravity is a tennis stadium named for Goran Ivanišević. Every late July the Croatia Open, Croatia’s ATP clay-court tournament since 1990, fills the stadium and the town: qualifying rounds through the week, night sessions, and a festival ground that turns Umag into the loudest small town on the Adriatic.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Croatia Open began in 1990, in the first year of independent Croatia, and grew into one of the ATP Tour’s most loved small tournaments — a launching pad for future champions (Alcaraz won here in 2021) with a party reputation that outgrew its size. The main stadium was renamed for Goran Ivanišević, whose 2001 Wimbledon win remains Croatian sport’s loudest memory; the tournament’s night sessions under the pines have become an institution.
