ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Užice is western Serbia’s working capital: a town set deep in the Đetinja gorge, under a 14th-century fortress whose walls climb the rock above the river. Its story is industrial as much as medieval — the 1900 hydroelectric plant on the Đetinja was among the first in Europe (lit from Tesla’s patents), the arms works made it Yugoslavia’s arsenal, and in 1941 it was the capital of the short-lived Partisan “Užice Republic” — the first liberated territory in occupied Europe. Today it is the practical gateway to Zlatibor, Mokra Gora and Tara, with a riverside promenade and the best espresso between Belgrade and Višegrad.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Užice grew under the fortress (Stari grad) built in the 14th century — Vlatko’s and later Ottoman stronghold on the road between Bosnia and the Morava valley; the Ottomans held it from 1463 to 1862. The 19th century made it the region’s trading town (the “little Paris of western Serbia”, locals still say); in 1900 the hydro plant on the Đetinja — built on Tesla’s alternating-current system, one of the first in Europe — lit the streets. In 1941 the Partisans held the town for 67 days and ran a “republic” with its own newspaper and munitions works — crushed in the enemy offensive of November, remembered in the museum on the hill. The fortress, restored and lit since 2010s, is the town’s emblem again.
