ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Marienkapelle is the town’s red exclamation mark: a pure late-Gothic hall church of red sandstone (1377–1480) built by the burghers — pointedly, on ground beside the cathedral, in the town’s own jurisdiction — and the burial church of Würzburg’s citizens, with Tilman Riemenschneider’s grave in its floor (the master’s own remains, a pilgrimage within the pilgrimage). The interior turns rococo — white and gold, a blaze against the red Gothic shell — and the tower’s spire carries the town’s scale. Around it the Marktplatz runs the town’s daily life: the Falkenhaus’s rococo facade (the tourist office’s home), the market stalls’ fruit and flowers, the cafés’ tables under the church’s walls — the square that holds the town together between Residence and bridge.

FOOD & DRINK

Where to eat nearby

01

Würzburg eats and drinks Franconian wine culture: the Sylvaner and Müller-Thurgau of the Würzburger Stein poured from the Bocksbeutel bottle, the schäufele roast with the crispy crackling, and the student city’s broad cheap table — bratwurst, flammkuchen and the Weinstuben’s boards.

02

The Alte Mainbrücke’s wine stands are the town’s ritual: a glass of local wine in the open air by the river (strictly the old rule — walk and drink on the bridge), with the fortress across the water. The Bürgerspital and the Juliusspital — the two great wine foundations — run cellar restaurants under the town, their wines the Stein’s own.

03

Around the market and the Dom, the Weinstuben and Franconian kitchens carry the classic table: the Weinstuben of the Juliusspital and the Bürgerspital, the Ratskeller under the town hall, and the market’s fruit-and-flower stalls for the walking breakfast. The student quarters south of the river run the cheap-and-good range.

04

Camping travellers: the Main Camp Resort’s riverside pitches sit on the Main’s southern bank 15 minutes’ walk from the bridge; the Kanu-Club’s simple site is the budget riverside option in season. The town’s markets cover self-catering; the Bocksbeutel makes the best picnic on the fortress walls.

HOTELS & STAYS

Where to stay nearby

01

The old town between the Residence and the bridge is the right base: everything of the first-day circuit walks, hotels in rebuilt burgher houses around the Dom and the market, and the bridge’s evening ritual at the door. Book ahead for the festival weekends.

02

The Julianenviertel (by the Juliusspital) and the Sanderhei quarter south of the Residence trade five quiet minutes for lower rates — the student-heavy streets carry cafés and small hotels.

03

For wine-country atmosphere, the vineyard villages across the Main (Höchberg, Veitshöchheim with its rococo garden) offer guesthouses a short S-Bahn or boat hop out — the calmer beds in festival season.

04

Camping: the Main Camp Resort Würzburg (riverside, south bank, year-round, modern facilities) is the city’s standard site — 15 minutes’ walk to the old town along the Main. The Kanu-Club Würzburg’s simple riverside camping runs in season (April–October, modest, atmospheric). Book the Resort for festival weekends.
