ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Bukovac House is the birthplace and museum of Vlaho Bukovac, the painter born in Cavtat in 1855 who became a central figure in modern Croatian painting. Set in the historic core near the harbour, the house preserves the rooms in which Bukovac lived and worked, together with a studio, paintings, personal objects and the decorated interiors that connect the domestic life of the family to the artist’s career. Bukovac’s importance to Croatian art lies in his role in bringing modern European painting to the Adriatic and in shaping a generation of painters through his work and his teaching; the house presents that story through the works and objects themselves rather than through grand claims. Changing exhibitions draw on the house’s holdings and on loans, so what is on view is not fixed. For a visitor it is the indoor counterpoint to the harbour and the peninsulas — the place where Cavtat’s modern cultural identity is read through the life and work of its best-known painter.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Vlaho Bukovac was born in Cavtat in 1855 and went on to become a central figure in modern Croatian painting, working across Europe before returning to the Adriatic and influencing a generation of painters through his art and his teaching. His birth house in the historic core of Cavtat, the place where his story begins, was later established as a museum dedicated to his life and work. The house preserves the domestic setting of the family alongside the studio and the works that mark Bukovac’s career, and it carries the decorated interiors and personal objects that tie the artist to the place. Over time the house has functioned both as a memorial and as an active exhibition space, with changing displays drawing on its holdings and on loans, so the presentation of Bukovac’s work has evolved rather than remaining fixed.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The historic house — the rooms in which Bukovac was born and lived, the domestic setting that opens the story of the painter and his family.
The studio — the working space associated with Bukovac, where the practice of painting is read alongside the finished works.
The paintings — works by Bukovac that show his place in modern Croatian painting and his role in bringing European painting to the Adriatic.
The personal objects and decorated interiors — the furnishings, decoration and belongings that connect the artist’s life to the house and to Cavtat.
The changing exhibitions — temporary displays drawn from the house’s holdings and loans, which mean that what is on view is not fixed and should be checked locally.
