ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Sea kayaking is the quiet-water counterpoint to Cavtat’s peninsula walks: the same wooded headlands and bathing coves read from sea level, at paddling pace, in water that stays calm through most of the summer. Tiha Bay, the sheltered water between the Rat and Sustjepan peninsulas, is the natural paddling ground — small enough to cross in half an hour, protected from the open Adriatic, and lined with pine shade, pebble coves and views back to the harbour frontage. No previous paddling experience is needed: sit-on-top doubles are stable, the crossing distances are short, and the shore is never far. The experience is the bay itself — the water, the wooded peninsulas and the swim stops — rather than a long coastal journey.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

You launch from the harbour side or a beach on the bay, get a short paddling briefing, and cross the flat water of Tiha Bay toward the Sustjepan shore. The route hugs the wooded edge of the peninsula, stops at a pebble cove for a swim, and returns across the bay with the harbour and the cemetery hillside above you. Paddling time is typically one and a half to two and a half hours depending on the stops; mornings are calmest and coolest. Guides set the pace for the slowest boat, and the whole route stays within sight of the shore.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

Guided trips use stable double sit-on-top kayaks with paddles and dry bags provided, plus a briefing before launch. Total on-water time runs roughly one and a half to two and a half hours with swim stops. You will get wet from the waist down launching and landing, so wear swimwear and bring water, sun protection and a strap for glasses. Trips run in season and are weather-dependent — a jugo or strong maestral can make the bay choppy and cancel launches. Independent kayak rental also exists along the waterfront in season; confirm current operators and availability locally.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Kayaking is the way Cavtat’s water is actually used rather than looked at — the bay, the coves and the wooded peninsulas experienced at the pace of a paddle. For a visitor it adds the sea-side reading of a landscape that the peninsula walks give from land, in calm water that suits first-time paddlers and families.
