ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Fortica fortress sits on the hill above Hvar town, a Venetian fortress built on an earlier medieval fort, with the best panorama over the harbour, the Pakleni islets and the open sea toward Vis. The ascent up through the town and the pine grove is the standard Hvar viewpoint walk, and the fortress is the place to watch the sunset over the islands.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
A fortress has stood on this hill since the medieval period, and the present Fortica was built by the Venetians in the 16th century, after the Turkish attack of 1571, to guard the town from above. It was reinforced under the Habsburgs and restored in the 20th century, and it now serves as a viewpoint and a venue. The fortress’s position above the town gives it the view that defines Hvar from above.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Fortica is the viewpoint that captures Hvar whole — the town, the harbour and the Pakleni islets in one panorama — and the natural climax of a walk through the old town. For a visitor it is the sunset spot and the image of the island from above.
