ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Vis is the outermost inhabited Croatian island, farthest from the mainland and closed to foreigners as a Yugoslav military base until 1989, which left it quieter and less developed than its neighbours. Its two towns, Vis and Komiža, sit on opposite sides of the island, and the coast holds the Blue Cave of Biševo and some of the clearest water in the Adriatic.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Vis was a Greek and then Venetian settlement, and its isolation made it a strategic military base under Yugoslavia, closed to foreigners until 1989. The island was the site of the Battle of Vis in 1866 between the Austrian and Italian fleets, and its quiet, undeveloped character today is a direct result of its long military isolation.
