ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Pliva Waterfall is the sight that defines Jajce. Where the Pliva river reaches the end of its short course, it pours over a limestone lip and falls some twenty-one metres into the Vrbas below — a broad, white curtain of water dropping between stone walls in the very centre of the town. It is not a remote cascade in a forest but a waterfall with houses, a fortress and a church above it, and that is what makes it remarkable: few towns in Europe have a fall of this scale at their heart. The waterfall is best read from below, where you stand at the confluence of the two rivers and look up at the Pliva coming down, with the ramparts of the fortress on the height above.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The waterfall is a natural feature of the confluence of the Pliva and the Vrbas, and the town of Jajce grew up around it precisely because of this meeting of waters. The Pliva, running clear and turquoise from the lakes upstream, reaches the edge of the gorge and drops into the larger, darker Vrbas; the fall has shaped the town’s layout, its mills and its defences for as long as there has been a settlement here. In the 20th century the waterfall’s flow was affected by the hydroelectric works on the Pliva upstream, and at certain periods the water has been reduced or temporarily diverted; the fall nonetheless remains the town’s central landmark and the reason Jajce sits where it does.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The fall itself — a broad curtain of white water dropping between the stone walls of the gorge, best viewed from the lower platform near the confluence.

02

The confluence of the Pliva and the Vrbas, where the clear water of the Pliva meets the larger river below the fall.

03

The view up to the fortress and the old town on the height above the gorge, seen from the lower viewpoint.

04

The upper viewpoint near the lip of the fall, which gives a different, top-down sense of the water leaving the Pliva and dropping into the gorge.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The waterfall is the reason Jajce exists. The town was built at the confluence of the Pliva and the Vrbas because the rivers gave it power, defence and a crossing, and the fall is the most dramatic expression of that geography. For a visitor it is the one sight that cannot be missed and the one that ties the town together — the fortress above, the rivers below, and the old town between them all meet at this point.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The waterfall sits in the centre of Jajce, a short walk downhill from the old town and the fortress. There is a small entrance fee for the lower viewpoint platform; bring small cash (BAM).
Surface
The path down to the lower viewpoint is steep in places and the stone around the fall is wet and slippery — wear shoes with grip.
Best Time
Spring and early summer, when the Pliva runs fullest; the fall is impressive at any time of year but at its most powerful after snowmelt and rain.
Context
The waterfall is within a few minutes’ walk of the fortress, the catacombs and the old town; combine them in a single morning loop.
