ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
A few kilometres upstream of Jajce, the Pliva river widens into a chain of clear turquoise lakes, and at Mlinčići a row of old wooden watermills stands directly on the water. A half-day trip out to the lakes and the mills is the natural complement to a morning in the town: where Jajce itself is steep, stony and dramatic, the Pliva lakes are flat, green and calm. You walk out among the mills on wooden footbridges, watch the wheels turning in the current, swim or rent a kayak on the clear water, and sit by the lake with the same river that powers the waterfall downstream. It is the one experience that shows the countryside around Jajce, and the easiest way to slow down after the fortress and the gorge.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You head upstream from Jajce to the shore of the Pliva lakes, where the cluster of wooden watermills at Mlinčići stands on the water. You walk out among the mills on the wooden footbridges, look into the working grindstones where grain is still milled in season, and take in the signature view — the low timber buildings reflected in the turquoise lake. From the mills you can follow the lakeshore, swim from the designated spots in summer, or rent a kayak or a small boat to get out onto the clear water. The lakes are fed by karst springs and run cold and bright year-round, and the banks are green and shaded. The whole visit is unhurried: a few hours among the mills and on the water, with a café and a restaurant beside the lake for a long lunch.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Mlinčići and the Pliva lakes are about five kilometres upstream of Jajce, reached by car or taxi in ten minutes, or by bike along the lakeside road. The mills and the footbridges are open and free to wander; a small number of mills may charge a token fee or sell flour. Swimming, boat and kayak rental are available in summer, typically from late spring to early autumn, and paid in cash (BAM). The lakes are cold, fed by springs, so swimming is refreshing rather than warm. There are cafés and a restaurant beside the lake. The site is flat and easy underfoot, though the wooden bridges and banks can be slippery when wet. Allow a relaxed half-day; the point is to slow down, and the lakeside is a good place for a long lunch.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Pliva lakes and watermills are the river culture that shaped the whole Jajce area — the same Pliva that powers the waterfall in town once ground the region’s grain at these mills. For a traveller they are the one experience that leaves the town and shows the countryside, and the gentle, photogenic balance to a day built around the fortress and the gorge. A visit to Jajce is most complete when it pairs the dramatic centre with this calm upstream stretch of the same river.
