ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Travnik is a small, steeply stacked town in the Lašva valley of Central Bosnia, folded between green hills at the foot of a medieval fortress. For more than two centuries it was the seat of the Ottoman viziers of Bosnia — the political capital of the province when Sarajevo was not — and that legacy is still the spine of the place: a fortified hill, a covered bazaar street, a painted mosque whose interior walls bloom with flowers and landscapes, and the clear blue karst spring of Plava Voda at the town’s edge. Travnik is also the birthplace of Ivo Andrić, the Nobel-laureate writer whose novel “Travnik Chronicle” set the town’s Ottoman years onto the page. For a visitor it is one of the most rewarding short stops in the country — a complete, walkable Ottoman-era town that can be read in a single day, with a fortress, a mosque, a spring and a literary memorial all within a short loop of one another.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Travnik grew up around a medieval fortress above the Lašva river and, after the Ottoman conquest, became one of the most important towns in Bosnia: from the 16th and especially the 17th to 19th centuries it was the seat of the Ottoman viziers of Bosnia, the political capital of the province, and the place where foreign consuls were posted in the early 19th century — the world Ivo Andrić later set onto the page in “Travnik Chronicle.” The town kept its Ottoman character through the Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav periods, and it is today one of the best-preserved Ottoman-era towns in the country, the birthplace of the Nobel-laureate writer, and a rewarding short stop in Central Bosnia.

Practical Information

Getting There

Travnik sits in the Lašva valley of Central Bosnia, on the road between Sarajevo and Jajce, and is a common day-trip stop from both. Intercity buses link Travnik with Sarajevo, Jajce, Zenica and the surrounding towns. By car it is reached along the regional road that follows the Lašva through the valley. Within the town the fortress, the bazaar street, the painted mosque, the Andrić house and Plava Voda are all within a short walk of one another, so the centre is best explored on foot.

What to Wear & Bring

Comfortable walking shoes are the main thing — the climb to the fortress is short but steep, and the old streets are paved in stone. Carry some cash (BAM) for the ćevabdžinicas of the bazaar street, which often prefer cash, and for any small admission fees at the fortress museum and the Andrić Memorial Museum. Dress modestly if you plan to enter the Šarena Džamija (shoulders and knees covered; scarves are usually provided), and bring a layer for the fortress ramparts and the Plava Voda park, which are cooler than the sheltered centre.

Accessibility & Mobility

The bazaar street, the Šarena Džamija and the Andrić Memorial Museum sit in the largely level centre of Travnik and are reachable on foot without steep gradients. The fortress stands on a steep hill above the town and is reached by a short, cobbled climb that is difficult for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Plava Voda and its park are at the foot of the fortress hill and are largely flat and easy underfoot, with some uneven paths beside the stream. The fortress ramparts themselves are uneven stone.
