ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The old town of Konjic is compact and walkable, and a slow walk through it takes in its two defining features: the restored six-arch Ottoman stone bridge over the emerald Neretva, and the woodcarving workshops for which the town is known. Konjic woodcarving (konjičko drvorezbarstvo) — the carving of furniture, chests and decorative objects in a distinctive relief style — was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017, and the town remains its centre. The walk covers several places in the town rather than a single site, so no single location is given here; the bridge, the riverside and the workshops are all within a few minutes on foot of each other.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
A gentle walk through the old town, crossing the bridge and seeking out the woodcarving workshops, showrooms and any museum or demonstration access. Not every workshop is open to walk-in visitors, so confirm museum, showroom, demonstration or workshop access in advance; the bridge and the riverside are public and open at all hours.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The bridge and the woodcarving are the two cultural signatures of Konjic, and a walk that takes in both is the way to read the town’s Ottoman and craft heritage in a single slow circuit. For a visitor it is the cultural counterpoint to the canyon, the bunker and the mountain.
