ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Old Stone Bridge, known locally as Stari Most or the Konjička ćuprija, is the landmark of Konjic — a six-arch Ottoman stone bridge that carries the old town across the Neretva at the point where the river leaves its mountain gorge. Built in 1682–1683 in the last years of Ottoman rule, it is one of the finest stone bridges of its period in Bosnia & Herzegovina, its six slender arches stepping across the emerald river in a single elegant line. The bridge was destroyed in March 1945 during the fighting of the Second World War and stood for decades as a gap between the two banks, before being reconstructed in 2009 on the basis of the original design and surviving documentation. Today it is again the crossing point of the old town and the place from which Konjic is best understood — the river, the gorge and the mountains all read from its crest.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The bridge was built in 1682–1683, late in the Ottoman period, at the strategic Neretva crossing that had fixed Konjic on the route between the interior and the Herzegovinian lowlands. It was a six-arch stone bridge of dressed limestone, a refined example of Ottoman bridge-building comparable in quality to the more famous bridges of Mostar and Višegrad. In March 1945, in the closing phase of the Second World War, the bridge was destroyed and its arches brought down into the river, severing the old town between the two banks. For more than sixty years the crossing remained broken, crossed by a temporary structure, while the stones of the original arches lay in the Neretva. Reconstruction was completed in 2009, using the surviving original stones recovered from the riverbed together with new dressed stone matched to the original, on the basis of historic documentation and photographs. The reconstructed bridge is a designated national monument of Bosnia & Herzegovina.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The Old Stone Bridge is the landmark of Konjic and the reason the town sits where it does — at the Neretva crossing on the route between the interior and the lowlands. For a visitor it is the single sight that orients the town, the river and the gorge, and the place from which the upper Neretva valley is best understood. Its destruction in 1945 and reconstruction in 2009 also make it a monument of memory as well as of architecture — a bridge lost and returned.
