ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Konjic is a town in northern Herzegovina, set where the Neretva river leaves a deep mountain gorge and opens toward the lowlands on its way to Mostar. It is one of the great outdoor hubs of Bosnia & Herzegovina: the Neretva rafting season runs through the canyon above the town, the high peaks of the Prenj massif rise behind it, and the alpine Boračko lake sits in the forest a short drive away. Konjic also carries a remarkable piece of Cold War history — ARK D-0, the vast nuclear command bunker built for Josip Broz Tito in secret beneath a hill outside town, now a contemporary art space reached by guided visit. The old town is anchored by a six-arch Ottoman stone bridge over the emerald Neretva, and the place is known too for its woodcarving, a craft inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible heritage. For a visitor it is the natural adventure base of the upper Neretva valley.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Konjic grew at a strategic crossing of the Neretva on the route between the interior and the Herzegovinian lowlands, and its Ottoman stone bridge, built in 1682–1683, fixed the town at that crossing. The bridge was destroyed in March 1945 during the fighting of the Second World War and reconstructed in 2009, again uniting the two banks of the old town. In the socialist Yugoslav period the hills above Konjic were chosen as the site of ARK D-0, a vast hardened command bunker intended to shelter the state leadership in the event of nuclear war; built in secret between 1953 and 1979, it was never used and is today a museum and contemporary art space. Konjic is also the centre of a woodcarving tradition, konjičko drvorezbarstvo, recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2017.

Practical Information

Getting There

Konjic lies on the M17 corridor between Sarajevo and Mostar, roughly halfway between the two. Rail and bus services may serve the town; check current timetables before you travel, as services and schedules can change. By car the M17 carries the valley route directly through the town.

What to Wear & Bring

For the historic centre, comfortable walking shoes with grip for the cobblestones. For rafting, equipment is normally operator-specific — confirm with the operator what is supplied. For Boračko Lake, swimwear and a towel in the warmer months. For Prenj, mountain footwear, layers, water, navigation and current safe-route information are essential; a local guide is advised for demanding objectives.

Accessibility & Mobility

The bridge and parts of the riverside are relatively easy and flat, and the compact old town can be explored on foot. ARK D-0, Boračko Lake, rafting bases and the mountain approaches require separate transport or operator arrangements and involve uneven outdoor or underground conditions; the bunker is entered via an access tunnel. The town does not offer full wheelchair accessibility across all sites — assess each site against your needs and confirm access details with the operator or local information in advance.
