ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Museum of the Old Bridge sits inside the Tara (Herceguša) tower, the 15th-century stone keep that guards the west end of Stari Most, and it is the place to come when you want to understand the bridge rather than only photograph it. Across several floors it tells the story of the crossing in three acts: how the Ottomans built it in the 1560s, how it was destroyed in the war in 1993, and how it was rebuilt from its own riverbed stone a decade later. Original fragments, archival drawings and the view from the tower’s top make it both a museum and a viewpoint — and the single best complement to a walk across the bridge itself.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Tara tower — also called Herceguša, “the duke’s tower” — predates the bridge, rising on the west bank in the 15th century as part of the fortifications that guarded the Neretva crossing before the stone arch was built. When Stari Most was completed in the 1560s, the tower became its western sentinel, paired with the Halebija tower on the east bank. For centuries it served military and then administrative purposes; in the Austro-Hungarian period it was adapted for civilian use. The Museum of the Old Bridge was established in the tower in 2006, two years after the bridge’s reconstruction, to document the bridge’s full history — construction, destruction and rebuilding — and to house the artefacts recovered during the reconstruction project, including hundreds of original stone blocks lifted from the riverbed.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
Original stone fragments — blocks of tenelija limestone recovered from the Neretva after the 1993 collapse, some bearing masons’ marks, displayed as they came out of the river.
Archival plans and drawings — historical documents and reconstruction studies showing how the bridge was designed in the 1560s and how it was rebuilt in 2001–04.
The destruction and reconstruction story — photographs, film and explanatory panels tracing the bridge’s collapse in November 1993 and the international project that returned it to the gorge.
The divers’ tradition — exhibits on the Mostari diving club and the centuries-old practice of leaping from the bridge’s apex into the Neretva.
The tower view — the upper level opens onto a viewing platform over Stari Most and the gorge, giving a high angle on the bridge few other spots offer.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The bridge is the obvious sight; the museum is the explanation. Without it, Stari Most is a beautiful arch you cross in a minute. With it, the same crossing becomes a 500-year story of Ottoman ambition, wartime loss and patient reconstruction — told through the very stones that fell into the river and were hauled back up. For anyone trying to grasp why the bridge matters to Mostar, and why its rebuilding was so carefully done, the museum is the essential stop, and the tower itself is a piece of that story, older than the bridge it watches over.
