ROUTE
A classic Balkan ride north up the Neretva canyon — river, cliffs and forest from Mostar to Sarajevo.
ABOUT THIS ROUTE
The run up the Neretva canyon from Mostar to Sarajevo is one of the great road rides of the Balkans: a twisting valley road that follows the emerald river north through limestone gorges, lakeside bends and the forested mountains above Konjic, before climbing over the Ivan sedlo pass and dropping into the Sarajevo basin. It is a ride of constant scenery and engaging, flowing corners — as rewarding for a slow tour as for a spirited one.

ATTRACTIONS
Stari Most
The stone arch thrown across the Neretva by order of Suleiman the Magnificent and completed in the 1560s — a single 29-metre span that gave the city its name and its symbol. Destroyed in November 1993, the bridge was rebuilt with stone hauled from the riverbed and reopened in 2004; the old bridge area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each summer trained local divers leap from its apex into the emerald water twenty-four metres below.
Mostar
Battle of Neretva Memorial Complex and Bridge
The Battle of Neretva memorial complex and bridge — the WWII museum and the adjacent demolished Neretva bridge site at Jablanica, read together as one memorial area.
Jablanica
Old Stone Bridge (Stari Most)
The six-arch Ottoman stone bridge over the Neretva at the heart of Konjic, built in 1682–1683, destroyed in 1945 and reconstructed in 2009 — a protected national monument and one of the finest Ottoman bridges in the country.
