ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Villa of the Mysteries is a Roman villa just outside the city walls, at the northwest edge of the site, holding the finest cycle of Roman frescoes to survive. The villa’s main room is covered in a continuous band of life-size figures — a woman being initiated into a mystery cult, probably the Dionysian mysteries — painted in the Second Style around 60 BC, in vivid reds and purples against a painted architecture. The meaning of the scenes is still debated, which gives the villa its name, but the quality of the painting is not: it is the best Roman painting to survive anywhere, and the reason many visitors come to Pompeii.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Villa of the Mysteries was built in the 2nd century BC and enlarged in the early 1st century BC, when the great fresco cycle was painted. It was a country house outside the city walls, looking out over the sea and the vineyards, and it survived the AD 79 eruption largely intact under a deep layer of ash. The frescoes were uncovered in 1909–1910, and they were detached and restored in the 20th century before being replaced on the walls. The identity of the cult depicted — Dionysian, or a marriage, or a ritual of initiation — is still debated by scholars, which is why the villa is called the Villa of the Mysteries.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The fresco cycle — the continuous band of life-size figures showing the initiation, the finest Roman painting to survive.
The red room — the room of the frescoes, with its Pompeian red ground and the painted architecture.
The villa layout — the atrium, the peristyle garden and the rooms opening onto the sea view.
The view over the vineyards — the villa’s position outside the walls, looking toward Vesuvius.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Villa of the Mysteries holds the best Roman painting to survive, and the one that most clearly shows what Roman wall painting could do at its peak. For a visitor, it is the single sight at Pompeii that most rewards the walk out to it, and the one that most changes the sense of what the buried city looked like inside.
