ABOUT THE DESTINATION
Herculaneum is the Roman town buried by the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius, smaller than Pompeii but preserved in extraordinary detail by a deep layer of hot volcanic mud. Wooden structures, upper storeys, mosaics and the boat houses where residents sheltered survive in the UNESCO-listed excavations beneath modern Ercolano, a short Circumvesuviana ride from Naples.
