ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Cape Kamenjak is the protected karst headland at the southernmost tip of Istria, a long, low spit of meadow, scrub and rocky coves reaching out into the sea below the village of Premantura. It is Pula’s great outdoor counterpoint to the Roman old town — a place of wild swimming, snorkelling over seagrass meadows, cliff-jumping and dirt tracks that run down to one cove after another. The rocks along the shore hold real dinosaur footprints, preserved in the limestone, and the whole headland is a protected landscape with no development beyond a couple of seasonal beach bars.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Kamenjak was made a protected landscape in 1996, recognised for its rare Mediterranean flora, its undisturbed coastline and its geology. The dinosaur footprints in the shoreline rock date from the Cretaceous period, when the area was a muddy shore, and were identified in the 1990s — making the cape one of the few places in the Mediterranean where you can stand in the footprints of dinosaurs. The headland was never built on because it was a military zone, which preserved its wild character.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Kamenjak is the best wild swimming within reach of Pula and the place that rounds out a Roman-city visit with a full day of coast and nature. For a visitor it is the contrast that makes Pula more than a monument — antiquity in the morning, a wild headland in the afternoon.
