ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Twin Gates (Porta Gemina) are among the quietest of Pula’s Roman monuments: a modest double arch from the 2nd century AD that once formed the main northern entrance through the city wall. Right behind them, the hill hides something from a much later war — Zerostrasse, the network of tunnels dug during the First World War to shelter Pula’s residents from aerial bombing and now open as a freely walkable passage through the hill. Together they make a twenty-minute detour that reads two thousand years of the city’s defences in one stop, and in summer the tunnels are the coolest air in the centre.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Porta Gemina was built in the 2nd century AD into the later phase of the Roman city wall; its twin arches served pedestrian traffic while wider gates handled carts. The wall it pierced enclosed the colonial city of Pietas Julia from the 1st century BC onward, and a short excavated stretch of wall still stands beside the gate. Zerostrasse is younger by exactly one world war: from 1916 the Austro-Hungarian navy cut tunnels through the limestone hill beneath the Kaštel to shelter shipyard workers and residents from Italian air raids — Pula was then the empire’s principal naval base. The tunnels later served as shelter again in the Second World War, and after decades closed they were restored and opened to visitors.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
This is the one stop in Pula where the Roman city and the 20th-century military city touch directly: a gate built for the colony’s traders and a tunnel network dug for the empire’s civilians, ten metres apart. It is also the most practical stop on any summer itinerary — the tunnels are naturally air-conditioned, connected directly to the climb up to the Kaštel, and almost never crowded.
