ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Kastel is the star-shaped fortress that crowns the central hill of Pula, built by the Venetians in the 17th century on the site of an earlier medieval fort and reshaped by the Habsburgs into the bastion you see today. Its walls enclose the highest point of the old town, and the ramparts give a full panorama over the harbour, the Arena and the rooftops below. It now houses the Historical Museum of Istria and is used as an open-air venue in summer.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
A fort has stood on the central hill since pre-Roman times, controlling the harbour below. The present fortress was begun by the Venetians in 1631 to defend Pula against land and sea attack, and was enlarged into a bastioned fortification under Habsburg rule in the 18th and 19th centuries. It served as a military installation through both world wars before being turned over to the city, and the Historical Museum of Istria now occupies parts of the interior.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Kastel is the viewpoint that ties the city together — the one place to see how the Arena, the forum, the harbour and the hills fit into a single Roman-to-Habsburg town. For a visitor it is the natural place to end a walking circuit and take in the whole of Pula at once.
