ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Smederevska jesen — “the Smederevo Autumn” — has run every September since 1888, which makes it Serbia’s oldest continuously held festival and its largest wine event. For ten days the Great Town courtyard of the fortress turns into a village of wine pavilions: every Smederevo cellar pours, the folk ensembles circle the stage, and the festival crowns its Harvest Queen. The tradition is two layers deep — Smederevo’s vineyards fed the medieval Serbian court and the Habsburg tables after 1739, and the festival formalised the town’s identity as Serbia’s wine capital. Come for the fortress, stay for the pour.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The first “Exhibition of Grapes and Wine” was held in 1888; the name Smederevska jesen fixed itself in the interwar years. The festival ran through the Yugoslav era, and its pavilions have filled the fortress since the 1970s — the only venue big enough for the crowds.
