ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Smederevo’s vineyards are the oldest continuously worked in Serbia — the Romans drank here, the medieval court drank here, and the Habsburg Danube Swan trade carried Smederevo barrels to Vienna. The white Smederevka (the town’s namesake grape) is the everyday classic; the red Prokupac is Serbia’s indigenous answer to the north’s fashion; and the family cellars on the slopes above the town pour both with the unforced confidence of people whose grandfathers supplied the empire. Tastings are arranged through the tourist office or directly with the cellars — many are kitchen-table affairs, which is exactly the charm.
