ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Radimlja is the finest stećci site near Stolac, and a visit to read its carved medieval tombstones is the way into the medieval layer of the Bregava valley. The necropolis holds a dense collection of decorated stećci — figures, hunting scenes, crosses, ornaments and inscriptions, some associated with named stonemasons — and it is a component of the UNESCO-inscribed transnational serial property “Stećci Medieval Tombstone Graveyards”, inscribed in 2016. The site sits a short drive west of Stolac on the road toward Mostar, so it is a separate stop from the town-centre walk; allow time to move slowly among the stones and to read the carvings rather than to glance and leave.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
A visit to an open-air necropolis a short drive west of Stolac. The stones are best read slowly, in the cooler hours, when the light picks out the carvings; bring a hat and water in warm weather, as the site is exposed. Check current access and any entry arrangements locally before a visit.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Radimlja is the most direct record of the medieval society of the Bregava valley and the one sight at Stolac that is part of an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage property. For a visitor it is the medieval layer that stands alongside the Ottoman old town and the prehistoric Daorson.
