ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The fortress hangs on the rock where the Đetinja leaves the gorge: seven towers and walls of the 14th century, held by Serb lords, then the Ottomans for four centuries, abandoned after 1862 and restored in the 2010s. The walk up (10 minutes from town) earns the classic view — the gorge, the red roofs, the Zlatibor line on the horizon. Small museum rooms in the towers tell the fortress’s story.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Built in the 14th century (first mentioned as Vlatko’s hold), the fortress guarded the road between Serbia and Bosnia; the Ottomans took it in 1463 and held it as the frontier stronghold until 1862, when the garrison left for Bosnia and the town grew free beneath it. Restoration (2010–15) returned the walls and towers; the site is now the town’s main monument and viewpoint.

GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
The fortress held the “Užice gate” — the road between Bosnia and the Morava valley — for five centuries.
The Ottomans left in 1862 under the great-power pressure — one of the last Ottoman garrisons in Serbia.
The 2010s restoration used original stone from the gorge quarry — the walls read as new but are medieval in line.
The citadel’s viewpoint at sunset is the town’s photo — the gorge turns copper.
