ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Two museums, one town’s pride: the 1900 hydro plant on the Đetinja — built on Tesla’s system when Europe was still burning gas — whose original generators still turn on demonstration days; and the National Museum’s exhibition on the 1941 “Užice Republic”, the 67 days when the Partisans ran the town as the first liberated territory of occupied Europe, printing their own newspaper and running the arms works by night.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The power station (1900) was the work of the town’s industrialists and Tesla’s patents — the Đetinja’s fall drove the turbines; it lit Užice before many European capitals. The Partisan republic (autumn 1941) was the first liberated territory in occupied Europe — its newspaper Borba, its arms works, its 67 days ended in the November offensive; the museum keeps the printing press and the weapons.

GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
The 1900 plant is among the first alternating-current hydro plants in Europe — Tesla’s system at work a decade after Niagara.
The “Užice Republic” (24 September – 29 November 1941) ran its own newspaper (Borba, still the name of Serbia’s paper) and minted money.
The Partisan arms works repaired rifles by night during the 67 days — the museum keeps the lathes.
The original 1900 generators still turn on demonstration days — a working museum.
