ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Few cities in Europe can match Aosta’s shortcut: a gondola rises from the edge of the Roman centre to the Pila basin at 1,540 m in eighteen minutes, and the mountains simply begin. In winter Pila lays out 70 km of slopes from 1,540 to 2,750 m, famous for consistently groomed snow and views straight at Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn and Grand Combin. In summer the lifts reopen for hikers and riders: the Alta Balconata di Pila — a 17.7 km panoramic ridge loop with 1,221 m of ascent — now starts from the new La Stella di Pila gondola, making the circuit’s high shoulder accessible to ordinary walkers, while the Pila Bike Area strings 130 km of cross-country, enduro and flow trails down to the city.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You board the gondola in the morning with Roman ruins at your back, and step out into a basin of larch and Alpine meadow with four of the Alps’ giants on the skyline. Hikers take the family loop to Lake Chamolé (6.7 km, two hours) or the full Alta Balconata from La Stella; bikers drop into the 17-trail gravity park; in the hut terraces the lunch is polenta concia with a view of the Matterhorn. Guided pasture walks on Mondays and Wednesdays (€20) explain the cheese-making that flavours the valley below.
