ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Bad Kleinkirchheim is where Carinthia’s two great winter traditions meet in one valley: a World Cup ski mountain with the Franz Klammer downhill dropping 842 vertical metres, and two thermal spas soaking at 34 °C at the bottom of the run. In summer the same mountains become a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of rounded Nock peaks, alpine-rose meadows and Europe’s longest flow-country bike trail, while the village keeps its 1973-granted spa-town calm. It sits at over 1,100 m in the Gurktal Alps, half an hour from both Villach and Millstätter See.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

First documented on 5 July 1166, when Archbishop Conrad II of Salzburg confirmed the donation of a chapel (“Chirchem”) to Millstatt Abbey — the name Kleinkirchheim distinguishes it from Großkirchheim in the Möll valley. Benedictine monks cleared the forest and settled smallholders; agriculture ruled until the mid-20th century, though bathers had sought the warm spring since the 17th century. The spa era was sealed when the village took the prefix “Bad” in 1973, and ski history wrote the next chapter: Franz Klammer won his first race here in 1971, and the FIS World Cup made the Klammer downhill a household name.

NATURE & WILDLIFE

The Living Landscape

The valley sits at 1,100 m in the Gurktal Alps, ringed by the rounded Nock peaks (Wöllaner Nock 2,145 m, Klomnock 2,331 m) of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Nockberge — a mosaic of larch and Swiss-stone-pine forest, alpine pastures grazed for centuries, and cotton-grass bogs. Alpine rose turns the slopes pink in early summer; marmots whistle from the boulder fields, and the protected Speik herb (once Carinthia’s export perfume plant) grows on the higher ridges. The biosphere model — protection through sustainable use, not wilderness — keeps cows, huts and cable cars part of the landscape.
