ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Tempietto is why Cividale is on the UNESCO map: a small rectangular oratory of the 8th century, part of the monastic complex of Santa Maria in Valle, whose far wall carries six life-size stucco saints in niches under an arcade — the only monumental figurative stucco cycle of the early Middle Ages to survive anywhere, executed with a classicism that looks forward to the Renaissance across six centuries. Blue-and-gold frescoes of saints, a carved altar throne and the marble transenna complete a room that visitors enter in small groups, in near silence, as the most atmospheric quarter-hour in Friuli.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The oratory was built in the Gastaldaga — the ducal quarter of the first Lombard duchy in Italy, established when Alboin’s Lombards entered the peninsula in 568 and made Forum Iulii their first capital. The stuccoes are dated around 760, in the age of Duke Ratchis. The complex passed to Benedictine nuns who still tend the monastery, and the Tempietto’s global singularity anchored Cividale’s place in the UNESCO serial site “Longobards in Italy: the Places of Power”, inscribed in 2011.
