ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Saint Spyridon is Corfu: his relics were carried here from Constantinople after its fall in 1453, and the island credits him with saving it from plague (1629), the Ottoman siege (1716) and famine — four processions a year replay those deliverances with the saint borne through the lanes by barefoot confraternities. The 1580s church itself is unassuming outside except for its red-domed bell tower, the tallest in the Ionian; inside, a silver sarcophagus holds the relics and the ceiling panels retell his life in 18th-century painting by Panagiotis Doxaras and his successors.
