Horse trails through the sands
Riding the forest tracks and sand ridges from Devojački bunar — the reserve’s traditional way through the pines and the open steppe.

Nature & Reserves
The European Sahara — a vast sand refuge of steppes, forests and rare birds in southern Banat.
The Deliblatska Peščara is Europe’s largest inland sand terrain — a 300-square-kilometre special nature reserve of dune ridges, steppe grasslands and planted acacia and poplar forests between the Danube and the Carpathian foothills of southern Banat. The winds of the last ice age piled the sands; the Habsburg foresters pinned them down with Europe’s boldest afforestation (from 1818); and the result today is one of the continent’s great steppe-and-bird landscapes — saker falcons, imperial eagles, sand martin colonies and the steppe flowers that bloom between the dunes.

HISTORY & CULTURE
The sands shifted freely until the late 18th century, burying villages and roads; the Banat Military Frontier’s administration began the great planting in 1818 — black locust, poplar and the native juniper stands (Serbia’s only) — creating Europe’s oldest planned sand-afforestation. The special nature reserve (2002) protects the mix of steppe, forest and wetland; the Devojački bunar and Čardak forest lodges, built for the frontier foresters, anchor the visitor routes.
