ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Duino Castle is the coast’s emblem — a fortress-palace of the 14th and 16th centuries held by the same family, the princes of Thurn und Taxis, for over four hundred years, its white bulk standing straight over the cliff. The terraced gardens descend to the sea through pines and statues, the rampart walk gives the coast’s best castle view, and a footpath drops below to the Rocca — the ruin of the medieval castle on its own rock, where (tradition says) a despised bride was walled up as the “White Lady” whose lament Rilke heard. The castle is still a family home, open seasonally, with the bunker of the German Kriegsmarine hidden in its park from 1943.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

A first castle stood here by the 11th century; the present one was raised by the Della Torre family and passed by marriage to the Thurn und Taxis, the great postal dynasty of the empire, who still own it. In 1911–12 their guest Rainer Maria Rilke, staying with Princess Marie, walked these cliffs in a despairing silence and heard the first lines of the Duino Elegies — the poem-cycle he completed a decade later and dedicated to her. In September 1943 the German navy burrowed a command bunker into the castle park to watch the Adriatic; it is still there.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The castle is where the coast’s three stories meet — the feudal Adriatic, the Rilke legend and the Second World War — and its gardens are the single best vantage over the cliff coast.
