ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Drina is the great river of Eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, formed a short distance upstream of Foča where the Tara and the Piva rivers join, and from there flowing north through a series of mountain valleys and gorges on its long course toward the Sava. At Foča the river runs past the town at the confluence with the Čeotina, and the Drina valley is the natural corridor that connects the town to the surrounding country — upstream toward the Tara and the Montenegrin border, downstream toward Višegrad and the rest of the Drina basin. The river is clear and powerful, fed by the mountain tributaries that give it the character that has long made the Drina a defining feature of the region. For a visitor, the Drina at Foča is the broad, calm water that the town sits beside — the backdrop to the old centre and the riverbanks, and the connective thread of any journey through Eastern Bosnia. It is also the parent river of the Tara Canyon: the Tara that carved the canyon is the Drina’s main headwater, so the two are read together as one river system.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Drina has been a corridor and a boundary through the region for as long as the valleys have been settled, and its course has shaped the towns along its banks, Foča among them. The river was historically navigated and fished, and its valley formed a natural route between the interior of the Balkans and the wider Drina basin. In the modern period the Drina became known as one of the cleanest rivers in the region, and its upper course — including the stretch at Foča — has been valued for its water quality and its mountain setting. The river’s name is tied to some of the best-known writing on the region, and the Drina basin as a whole remains one of the principal natural features of Eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The river at Foča — the broad, clear Drina running past the town at the confluence with the Čeotina, the backdrop to the old centre and the riverbanks.
The confluence of the Tara and Piva — the meeting of the two headwater rivers upstream of Foča that forms the Drina, the source of the river that flows past the town.
The Drina valley — the mountain corridor the river follows, the natural route that connects Foča to the wider Eastern Bosnia and the Drina basin.
The riverbanks and access points — the places where the Drina is reached from the town, the setting for riverside walks and quiet stops.
The connection to the Tara — the Drina as the parent river of the Tara Canyon, so the canyon and the river are read as one system.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Drina is the river that ties Eastern Bosnia together, and at Foča it is the water the town is built beside. It is the parent river of the Tara Canyon and the corridor that connects the town to the wider region, so understanding the Drina is understanding the setting of Foča itself. For a visitor it is the calm, constant presence behind the town’s more dramatic adventure stories.
