ABOUT THIS ITINERARY

Foča is best understood as a town in two layers: a riverside Ottoman heritage town on the Drina, and the principal base for Tara Canyon rafting. This two-day itinerary gives each layer its own day. The first is spent in the town itself — the old čaršija beside the Drina, the rebuilt Aladža Mosque that carries the story of the town’s Ottoman golden age and its wartime loss and recovery, and the Drina riverfront that ties the town to the water — read together with the wider river-and-mountain landscape around it. The second day is given to the Tara Canyon, the deep gorge that makes Foča an adventure destination, experienced from the river on a rafting descent arranged through a qualified local operator. Rafting must be arranged through a qualified operator and depends on river and weather conditions; no operators, prices, schedules or safety statistics are listed here, because all of those are set by the operator and confirmed on the day.

OVERVIEW

The route at a glance

The two days follow the two layers of Foča. Day 1 is a town day on foot: the old centre beside the Drina at the Čeotina confluence, the Aladža Mosque rebuilt and reopened in 2019, the Drina riverfront, and a reading of the wider river-and-mountain country that frames the town. Day 2 leaves the town for the Tara Canyon — the deep limestone gorge that is the setting for the rafting for which the region is known, run with a qualified local operator who provides the boat, equipment and guide and shapes the descent to the river conditions.

Day 1 is entirely on foot within the town; Day 2 needs a car or arranged transfer to the rafting launch points on the upper Tara, reached from Foča by road. The rafting day is subject to river and weather conditions and to the operator’s arrangements — confirm both when booking.

THE SCHEDULE

Day by day

Day 1

The Old Centre, the Aladža Mosque & the Drina

A walkable town day — the riverside čaršija of Foča, the rebuilt 16th-century Aladža Mosque, the Drina riverfront at the Čeotina confluence, and the wider river-and-mountain landscape around the town.

  1. Morning

Foča Old Town & Historic Centre

    1–2 hours

Begin in the old centre of Foča, beside the Drina at the confluence with the Čeotina — the ground where the town has stood since the Ottoman period. It was a riverside čaršija of mosques, traders’ workshops and stores along the riverfront, and for centuries the commercial and religious heart of the town. Most of the Ottoman religious heritage was destroyed in the 1990s war, and the old centre today is read in what stands, what was lost and what has been rebuilt. Walk the riverside streets and let the quarter orient you before stepping into the Aladža.

  2. Late morning

    The Aladža Mosque

    45 min

A short walk within the old centre stands the Aladža Mosque, built in 1549 and long renowned for its painted interior decoration, from which its name — “the coloured” mosque — is drawn. It was destroyed in the 1990s war and rebuilt and reopened in 2019, reconstructed on its original site to its historical form. It is the single monument that carries both the Ottoman heritage of Foča and the story of its wartime loss and post-war recovery. Dress modestly, remove shoes before entering, and avoid prayer times; check locally for visitor access outside prayer hours.

  3. Midday

    The Drina riverfront

    1 hour

From the old centre walk down to the Drina, the great river of Eastern Bosnia formed a short distance upstream where the Tara and the Piva join. At Foča the river runs past the town at the Čeotina confluence, broad and clear, and the riverbanks are the easiest encounter with the water that defines the town. The Drina is the parent river of the Tara Canyon — the Tara that carved the canyon is the Drina’s main headwater — so the two are read together as one river system, and the riverfront is the natural lead-in to the canyon day that follows.

  4. Afternoon

Explore Foča by river and mountain landscapes

    A half-day to a full day

Round out the town day with the wider river-and-mountain country around Foča — the Drina valley as a corridor, the clear tributaries that feed it, and the forested Dinaric slopes that close in around the town. A car or arranged transport is the practical way to take in the valley roads and the quieter mountain routes toward Sutjeska National Park and the Montenegrin border; the riverside and the old centre are explored on foot. It is the experience that holds the town’s separate sights together and gives the wider picture of Eastern Bosnia that a single rafting trip does not.

GETTING AROUND

Day 1 is entirely on foot within the old centre and along the Drina riverfront, which is compact and flat. A car or arranged transport is useful only for the wider valley and mountain routes in the afternoon; the town itself needs no transport.

EAT & DRINK

Begin with a light breakfast at your accommodation or a café near the riverfront. Plan lunch in the town centre — small restaurants and ćevapdžinicas along the main streets near the river — and follow it with a coffee at a riverside café by the Drina, the quiet pause the town runs on.

Day 2

The Tara Canyon & a Rafting Descent

A day on the Tara Canyon — the deep limestone gorge that makes Foča an adventure destination, experienced from the river on a rafting descent arranged through a qualified local operator.

  1. Morning

    The Tara Canyon

A full day with the operator

The second day is given to the Tara Canyon, the gorge cut by the Tara river through the limestone of the Dinaric Alps — one of the deepest river canyons in Europe. The canyon is a landscape rather than a single ticketed site, read from the rim viewpoints and from the river itself, and the rafting descent is the principal way to travel through it. The stretch that runs along the border between Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro is the section most familiar to visitors, and the scale and remoteness of the gorge are the reason travellers come.

  2. Morning to afternoon

    Raft the Tara Canyon

A full day with the operator

The canyon is properly entered on a rafting descent, run with a qualified local operator based in or around Foča who provides the raft, the safety equipment and the guide, and shapes the run to the river conditions and the experience of the group. The water is clear and cold, fed by the mountain tributaries of the Dinaric Alps, and the descent travels between the steep forested walls and through the river’s white-water sections. Rafting must be arranged through a qualified operator and depends on river and weather conditions; do not run the river independently. No operators, prices, schedules or safety statistics are listed here — confirm all of these with a licensed local operator when booking.

GETTING AROUND

Day 2 needs a car or an arranged transfer to the rafting launch points on the upper Tara, reached from Foča by road. The operator normally coordinates the transfer from town; confirm the meeting point and transport arrangements when booking.

EAT & DRINK

Arrange meals through the operator for the rafting day — trips typically include a meal or a stop as part of the package, but this varies by operator and is confirmed when booking. Eat in Foča the evening before and on return; carry water for the day on the river.

SEASONAL NOTES

When to go

Late spring to early autumn is the period for both the town walk and the rafting. The Tara is highest in late spring from snowmelt and steadier through the summer; the rafting season follows the river’s flow, and any trip depends on river and weather conditions confirmed with the operator. The higher mountain roads around Foča can be affected by weather outside the late-spring to early-autumn period. No fixed seasonal conditions are guaranteed — check current conditions with a licensed local operator before planning a rafting trip.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Base
Stay in Foča town, the natural base for both the old-centre day and the Tara Canyon rafting day. Small hotels and guesthouses near the centre put the riverfront and the rafting operators within easy reach.
Arranging
Arrange Tara Canyon rafting through a qualified local operator based in or around Foča; do not run the river independently. The operator provides the raft, safety equipment and guide, and shapes the trip to the river and weather conditions. Confirm operators, prices, schedules and what is included when booking — none are listed here.
Walking
Day 1 is on foot within the compact, flat old centre and along the riverfront; wear comfortable shoes. Day 2 is on the river — wear clothing and footwear that can get wet and bring a change of dry clothes, as the operator advises.
Timing
The times above are guidance, not a fixed schedule. Day 2 in particular follows the operator’s arrangements and the river conditions; confirm the timing when booking.
Money
Carry some cash (BAM) for the town centre and riverside cafés. Confirm rafting pricing and what is included with the operator directly; no prices are listed here.
Access
The old centre and Drina riverfront are flat and walkable. The Tara Canyon rafting day is an adventure activity run by a qualified operator and is subject to river and weather conditions and the operator’s assessment of what is suitable for your experience.
