ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The old centre of Foča sits beside the Drina at the confluence with the Čeotina, on the ground where the town has stood since the Ottoman period. It was a riverside čaršija — a market quarter of mosques, traders’ workshops and stores arranged along the riverfront and the streets running back from it — and for centuries it was the commercial and religious heart of the town. The old centre is most defined by its mosques: the Aladža, the most celebrated, and a number of others that together made Foča one of the notable Ottoman towns of Eastern Bosnia. Most of that religious heritage was destroyed in the 1990s war, and the old centre today is a place where the long Ottoman history of the town and the difficult recent history of its destruction and rebuilding are visible together — in the reconstructed Aladža, in the sites of lost mosques, and in the surviving fabric of the riverside streets. For a visitor, the old centre is the heritage layer of Foča, read alongside the rivers that defined the town and the outdoor country that now draws most travellers to the region.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Foča developed as an Ottoman town on the Drina, and its old centre grew around the riverside čaršija that served the surrounding mountain country. The town’s mosques — the Aladža among them — were built in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the čaršija was the trading heart of the community for the Ottoman and later periods. In the 1990s war, the great majority of Foča’s Ottoman mosques were destroyed, and the old centre lost much of its historic fabric in a short time. In the post-war period, heritage reconstruction has been undertaken, most visibly in the rebuilding and 2019 reopening of the Aladža Mosque, and the old centre is today a mixture of surviving streets, rebuilt monuments and the marked sites of what was lost. The history of the quarter is therefore read as much in absence and reconstruction as in standing fabric.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The riverside čaršija — the old market quarter beside the Drina at the Čeotina confluence, the ground on which the town’s Ottoman history was built.

02

The Aladža Mosque — the reconstructed 16th-century mosque, the centrepiece of the old centre and its most significant standing monument.

03

The sites of the lost mosques — the marked places of the Ottoman mosques destroyed in the 1990s war, read together with the rebuilt Aladža as a record of loss and recovery.

04

The riverfront streets — the surviving fabric of the old centre running back from the Drina, the setting for a walk through the town’s heritage.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The old centre is the heritage layer of Foča, the place where the town’s long Ottoman history and its recent wartime history are read together. It is a quiet counterpoint to the outdoor-adventure story for which the town is now best known, and for a visitor it is the part of Foča that holds the memory of the place — in what stands, what was lost, and what has been rebuilt.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The old centre lies beside the Drina in central Foča and is explored on foot from the riverfront. There is no ticket or gate; it is a town quarter rather than a single site.
Visiting
Allow a relaxed walk from the Čeotina confluence past the Aladža and along the riverside streets. Standard mosque visiting etiquette applies at the Aladža and any active place of worship.
Best Time
The old centre can be walked year-round; late spring to early autumn is the most pleasant period and pairs well with a river or rafting trip.
Context
Pair the old centre with the Drina riverfront and the Aladža Mosque, and use it as the heritage balance to a Tara Canyon rafting day. It is the town layer of Foča; the canyon is the outdoor one.
