ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Fruška Gora was an island of the Pannonian Sea; today it is a lone 80-kilometre mountain rising over Vojvodina’s plains — Serbia’s oldest national park (1960) and its holiest landscape. Sixteen Orthodox monasteries, the survivors of a medieval thirty-five, hide in its beech forests — Krušedol, Novo Hopovo, Grgeteg, Jazak, Velika Remeta among them — earning the mountain its epithet, the Serbian Athos. Add the vineyards that made bermet famous, the Stražilovo viewpoint over the Danube, and 700 km of marked trails, and Fruška Gora becomes Vojvodina’s essential escape.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

The monasteries rose in the late 15th and 16th centuries, founded largely by the Branković despot family and the refugees of the Serbian collapse south of the Danube — a holy mountain built by exile. Ottoman raids, wars and the 20th century destroyed nineteen of them; the sixteen survivors are declared Monuments of Culture of Exceptional Importance (1990), several holding royal and patriarchal tombs: Krušedol the mausoleum of king Milan Obrenović and princess Ljubica, Jazak the relics of tsar Uroš, Vrdnik-Ravanica those of prince Lazar. The Holy Synod formally declared the mountain “Holy” in 2003.

What to Wear & Bring

Sturdy shoes for forest trails, headscarves for women entering the churches (scarves usually available at doors), and cash for monastery donations.

Accessibility & Mobility

The monasteries sit at road level with level entrances; the hiking trails are natural surface and ungraded.
