ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Ilok is the easternmost town in Croatia, a small hilltop settlement above a bend in the Danube, surrounded by the vineyards that made it a historic wine centre. Its old town holds a medieval castle, Franciscan monastery and wine-cellars, and it looks out across the river to Serbia and the Vojvodina plain.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Ilok was the seat of the medieval noble family of Iločki in the 15th century, and its castle and Franciscan monastery date from that era. Under the Habsburgs it became a wine town — its Traminac was served at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation — and it remains the wine capital of eastern Croatia.
