ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The forest, streams and meadows of Kozara are the natural fabric of the park — the beech and fir woodland, the clear water and the open glades that cover the mountain and shelter its wildlife. The forest is the habitat of the park’s deer, wild boar and birdlife, and it is threaded by the hiking and cycling trails that are the principal way to experience Kozara. The forest is a broad landscape area rather than a single point, so no coordinate is given here; the destination coordinate marks the Mrakovica visitor area and is not a substitute for a forest trail or a stream. Forest, weather and seasonal conditions should be checked before departure, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed — observation must be from a respectful distance.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The forest of Kozara is the natural feature that the park was created to protect when Kozara was declared a national park in 1967. The beech and fir woodland, the streams and the meadows have shaped the mountain’s character for centuries, and they remain the setting of its trails, its wildlife and its recreation in the decades since the park’s establishment.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The beech and fir forest — the woodland that covers the mountain and defines the park.
The clear streams — the water that runs through the forest and the meadows.
The meadows and glades — the open spaces within the woodland.
The wildlife — the deer, wild boar and birdlife of the forest, observed from a respectful distance and never guaranteed.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The forest and streams are the natural reason Kozara is a national park and the setting of everything a visitor does on the mountain. For a visitor they are the substance of a forest walk or a cycle ride, the quiet layer beneath the memorial and the peak.
