ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Mrakovica memorial complex is the central historical site of Kozara National Park, set on the heights of Mrakovica at the heart of the mountain. It is dominated by Dušan Džamonja’s concrete monument, a striking sculptural form that commemorates the fighters and civilians connected with the 1942 Kozara offensive and its consequences. The memorial is described here neutrally as a place of remembrance for those caught up in the offensive and its aftermath, rather than as a celebration. The coordinate given here marks the central Mrakovica visitor and memorial area, the natural orientation point for a visit, rather than every path or structure within the complex. The memorial is accessible year-round.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Kozara’s modern identity is inseparable from the Second World War. In 1942 the Kozara offensive saw fierce fighting on the mountain between Partisan forces and the Axis, with heavy civilian losses and far-reaching consequences for the population of the region. The memorial at Mrakovica, with the monument by the sculptor Dušan Džamonja at its centre, was unveiled in 1972 as the central commemoration of the fighters and civilians connected with the offensive and its aftermath. It stands today as one of the most powerful WWII memorials in the former Yugoslavia and the principal historical site of the park.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Mrakovica is the historical heart of Kozara and the reason the mountain carries the memory it does. For a visitor it is the central orientation point of the park and the place where the difficult chapter of the 1942 offensive and its aftermath is read most directly.
