ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The čaršija of Maglaj is the old quarter that spreads beneath the fortress on the slope down to the Bosna, the layered Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian fabric of a northern Bosnian river town. It is a compact district of narrow streets, stone houses and sacral buildings, gathered around the Kuršumlija Mosque and the clock tower and running down to the riverside where Uzeirbegov konak stands by the bank. Walking it is the way to read the town at the pace it was built — a short, level wander that ties the fortress above to the river below and that takes in the principal heritage buildings of Maglaj in a single loop.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The čaršija grew up beneath the Gradina after the Ottoman conquest, developing as the civilian quarter of a fortified river crossing: a mosque, a clock tower, the stone houses of the better-off, and the hans (inns) that served the caravan traffic along the Bosna valley road. The Kuršumlija Mosque, the principal sacral building of the old town, was raised in the second half of the sixteenth century. Uzeirbegov konak, the old-Bosnian residence on the riverbank, was built around 1875 by Salih-beg Uzeirbegović, a descendant of the Maglaj captains; local tradition holds that its ground floor was built of cut stone blocks originally prepared for a bridge that Jusuf-paša had offered the town. Delibegov han, on the left bank of the Bosna, was raised in the second half of the nineteenth century and, after being devastated in the 1990s war, was restored in 2013 with European Union support through the “Past for the Future” programme.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The Kuršumlija Mosque — the principal Ottoman mosque of the town, the sacral centrepiece of the čaršija.
The sahat-kula — the clock tower in the fortress forecourt, the timekeeping landmark of the old town.
Uzeirbegov konak — the old-Bosnian residence on the riverbank, the finest secular building of the old quarter.
The stone houses and lanes — the ordinary fabric of the čaršija, the streets that tie the fortress to the river.
Delibegov han — the restored nineteenth-century inn on the left bank of the Bosna, a record of the caravan traffic of the valley road.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The čaršija is the lived-in layer of Maglaj — the old town beneath the fortress, where the town’s Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian past is still walked through rather than only looked at. For a visitor it is the connective tissue of a Maglaj visit, the quarter that holds the mosque, the clock tower, the konak and the riverside in one short walk.
