ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Every hill town in Istria funnels to a square, and Motovun’s is one of the finest: Trg Josepha Ressela sits at the very top of the hill, lined with the Romanesque-Gothic bell tower of St Stephen, the former city loggia, and a run of café terraces facing the valley. It is simultaneously the village’s living room and its viewpoint — coffee in the morning, festival crowds in July, and the whole Mirna valley for a backdrop in between.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The square is the medieval commune’s centre, rebuilt and refined across the Venetian centuries. The bell tower of St Stephen carries a Romanesque base with a Gothic crown; the loggia beside it was the seat of the commune’s public life — contracts, judgments and announcements. The square’s name honours Josef Ressel, the Austrian navy official born nearby who invented the ship’s screw propeller.
