ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Stara Varoš is the old Ottoman quarter of Podgorica, a low district of narrow lanes, two surviving mosques and the 17th-century Sahat Kula clock tower — the most historic corner of an otherwise modern city. Podgorica was heavily bombed in World War II and largely rebuilt afterwards, so little of its old town survived, and Stara Varoš is the best remaining piece: a residential grid of low stone houses, the Clock Tower (Sahat Kula) that is the city’s oldest landmark, and the Osmanagić and Doganjski mosques. It is small and quiet, and the place to come for a sense of the city before the modern rebuild.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Podgorica grew under Ottoman rule from 1474 as a trading town on the crossroads of the Morača and Ribnica rivers, and Stara Varoš was its Ottoman residential quarter — a grid of narrow lanes with stone houses, mosques, hammams and a clock tower. The Sahat Kula (Clock Tower), built in the 17th century, is the best-known survivor. Heavy Allied bombing in World War II destroyed most of the old town, and the post-war rebuilding of the city as Titograd left only fragments of the Ottoman fabric, of which Stara Varoš is the largest. Two mosques and the clock tower remain in use, and the quarter has been partly revived with cafés and small businesses.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The Sahat Kula (Clock Tower) — a 17th-century Ottoman clock tower, the oldest landmark in Podgorica and the symbol of the old quarter.
The Osmanagić and Doganjski mosques — the two surviving mosques of the old Ottoman quarter, still in use.
The narrow lanes and low stone houses — the residential grid of the old quarter, the best surviving piece of pre-war Podgorica.
The riverside setting — Stara Varoš sits near the Morača and Ribnica, the rivers that gave the old town its reason to be.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Stara Varoš is the only place in Podgorica where the city’s Ottoman past is still legible — the rest was destroyed or rebuilt. For a visitor it is the historic counterweight to the modern capital, a quiet quarter of clock tower, mosques and old lanes that shows what Podgorica was before it became a post-war capital, and a useful stop on a transit day.
