ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Poreč is one of the rare towns on the Adriatic where you can still walk the Roman street plan exactly as it was surveyed two thousand years ago. The Decumanus Maximus — the east–west main street of the castrum — remains the old town’s spine, crossing the Cardo Maximus at a little square where a Roman relief of Mars and a Madonna and Child share a wall a metre apart. From either cross street, the low medieval houses lean toward each other over cobbles, Venetian windows sit inside Roman walls, and every side lane ends at the sea or a tower.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Parentium was laid out as a Roman military colony in the 1st century BC on the classic castrum grid: two main streets crossing at the centre, insulae of buildings between. The medieval town simply grew inside this frame — houses rose and fell on the same plots, the street lines never moved. That continuity is why the Old Town reads as one long layer-cake: Roman paving and wall fragments in the basements, Venetian facades at street level, Austrian signage painted on corners, Italian-era details between the wars. The Pentagonal Tower closes the Decumanus at its western end, guarding the gate that faced the harbour.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Most Adriatic towns rebuilt themselves out of their Roman frames; Poreč never did. Walking the Decumanus is walking a two-thousand-year-old street line — the kind of continuity that makes the town far more than a beach stop.
