ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Poreč’s harbour wraps the tip of the old-town peninsula, a working marina framed by the North Round Tower at one end and the open sea at the other. Directly offshore, the green silhouette of Sveti Nikola island — Poreč’s answer to the classic Adriatic island-view — closes the bay: a fifteen-minute boat shuttles swimmers and strollers across all summer, and from its shore the whole town lines up for the best postcard panorama there is.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The harbour has been Poreč’s front door since Roman Parentium shipped amphorae of Istrian oil and wine across the northern Adriatic. The round towers at the harbour mouth — the North Tower and the Round Tower — date from the 15th century, when Venetian Poreč ringed the peninsula with walls against pirate raids. Sveti Nikola island itself carried a monastery from the middle ages, then a nineteenth-century Austro-Hungarian fortress, and finally one of Istria’s first resort hotels in 1910 — the island has been Poreč’s swimming hole for over a century.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The harbour-and-island pairing is what makes Poreč more than its basilica: a town you can swim out of, with a beach escape fifteen minutes away and the whole skyline on show from the water.
