ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Habsburg-Ottoman congress of 1698–99 ended the Great Turkish War here; the wooden chapel was raised in 54 days (October–November 1698) for the negotiations, and the round table — commissioned so no empire would sit at the head — entered history as the origin of the diplomatic phrase. The current stone chapel (1817) preserves the room’s dimensions and the memory; the treaty divided Hungary and Transylvania from the Ottomans and made Karlovci briefly the centre of Europe.
