ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Sremski Karlovci is Vojvodina’s baroque jewel — a small town of patriarchs, poets and vintners on the right bank of the Danube, five kilometres downstream from Novi Sad. The Treaty of Karlowitz (1699) was negotiated here in the round Chapel of Peace, built for the occasion with the first recorded round table in diplomatic history; the town was the spiritual and political capital of the Serbs in the Habsburg monarchy for two centuries, seat of the Metropolitan and home of the first Serbian gymnasium (1791); and its bermet wine — a herbal dessert wine served on the Titanic’s list — is still poured from cellar doors beneath the vineyards.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

After the Ottoman retreat, Karlovci became the heart of Serb life in the Habsburg lands: the Metropolitan of Karlovci sat here from 1713, the Gymnasium opened in 1791 (the first Serbian high school), the Theological Seminary in 1794, and the famous Gymnasium library of 20,000 volumes survives. The town hosted the Karlovitz congress of 1698–99, where the Habsburgs, Ottomans, Poles and Venetians divided the Balkans — the round table of the Chapel of Peace entered diplomatic legend. Bermet viticulture predates all of it; the phylloxera of the 1880s destroyed the old vineyards, replanted higher on the Fruška Gora slopes.
