ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The old town of Stolac is the historic stone quarter that grew at the foot of Vidoški grad on the Bregava, the layered medieval, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian core of the settlement. It holds the Čaršija mosque, the sahat-kula clock tower, the old stone houses of the čaršija and the Begovina — the fortified residential complex of the local begovi families, a group of stone houses and towers that reflects the fortified-residence tradition of Herzegovina. The old town suffered heavy destruction during the 1990s conflict, and a number of its buildings, including the mosque, were subsequently reconstructed; the reconstruction is part of the story the quarter now tells. The old town is a composite area rather than a single confirmed visitor point, so no single location is given here; the town coordinate should not be substituted for a specific building.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The old town of Stolac grew at the foot of Vidoški grad from the medieval period onward, and under Ottoman rule from the 15th century it developed as a local centre with a čaršija, a mosque, a clock tower and the stone houses of its prominent families. The Begovina, the fortified residential complex of the local begovi families, belongs to the Ottoman-era tower-house tradition of Herzegovina, in which a prominent family’s home was built to be defended. The old town suffered heavy destruction during the 1990s conflict, with the loss of a number of its historic buildings, and a process of reconstruction followed in the post-war period, including the rebuilding of the Čaršija mosque. The historic urban ensemble of Stolac is protected as a national monument.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here

The stone houses — the limestone houses of the čaršija, the fabric of the historic quarter.
The Begovina — the fortified residential complex of the local begovi families, the tower-house tradition of Herzegovina.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The old town is the lived core of Stolac and the place where its medieval, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian layers meet. For a visitor it is the walkable heart of a visit, and the Begovina is the clearest expression of the fortified-residence tradition that shaped the town’s prominent families.
