ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Vidoški grad is the medieval fortress on the hilltop above Stolac, one of the largest fortified complexes in Herzegovina. Its walls and towers look out over the Bregava valley and the old town below, and it was the stronghold that guarded the settlement and the route along the Bregava from the interior toward the sea. The fortress is reached by a short but steep, uneven climb from the old town, and the ruins — walls, towers and the outlines of the inner buildings — are open-air and unmaintained in places. The view from the top over the old town, the Bregava and the surrounding karst is the reward of the ascent, and the place from which the layered history of Stolac is read from above. The fortress and the historic urban ensemble below it are protected as a national monument.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Vidoški grad was a medieval stronghold associated with the Bosnian state and the Kosača lords, guarding the Bregava valley and the route from the interior to the sea. It was built and extended over the medieval period on the hilltop above the settlement, and it survived the Ottoman conquest as a garrison before declining as power shifted to the new towns of the plain. The fortress suffered damage in later periods, including the 1990s conflict, and the surviving walls, towers and building outlines are the remains of that medieval and later defensive history. The fortress and the historic urban ensemble of Stolac are protected as a national monument of Bosnia & Herzegovina.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Vidoški grad is the medieval layer of Stolac and the stronghold that fixed the town on the Bregava. For a visitor the climb to the ruins is the way to read the town from above and to understand the defensive logic that placed a fortress on the hill above the settlement.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
Reached by a short but steep, uneven climb from the old town; the route has loose stone and little shade, and the ruins are open-air and unmaintained in places. Wear sturdy shoes and carry water in warm weather. Check current access locally.
Best Time
Mornings and late afternoons for the heat and the light; spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for the climb. Avoid the midday sun in summer.
Context
The fortress sits on the hilltop above the old town; the climb is a separate, more demanding undertaking than the town walk below.
