Secession architecture walk
A self-guided walk through the flower-patterned city — the City Hall, the synagogue, the savings-bank palace, the school of Zsolnay-clad villas and the Hungarian gymnázium.

Cities & Lakes
Hungarian Art Nouveau in Serbia — a secession city and the Palić lake resort on the northern plain.
Subotica holds the finest Hungarian Art Nouveau (Szecesszió) architecture anywhere: the monumental City Hall (1908–12) by Komor and Jakab, the sinuous synagogue of 1902 — one of Europe’s largest — and a streetscape of villas clad in the Zsolnay faience whose flower patterns are the city’s signature. Ten kilometres north, Palić is a classic Central European lake resort: 19th-century villas, the crooked Water Tower, the Women’s Beach pavilion and a protected nature park of bird-rich wetlands.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Subotica (Szabadka) grew rich on the Pannonian grain trade and rebuilt itself at the turn of the 20th century in the new Hungarian national style — Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab, followers of Ödön Lechner, gave it the City Hall, the synagogue and a school of villas. The Jewish community that commissioned the synagogue was destroyed in 1944; the building, restored in recent decades, stands as both monument and concert hall. Palić was developed from 1840s as the region’s spa and beach resort; its thermal-water lake and protected shore remain the summer retreat of the whole north.

Subotica sits on the Belgrade–Budapest rail line, 180 km north of Belgrade (3–3.5 h by train) and 100 km north of Novi Sad (1.5 h). Palić is 10 minutes by local bus 19 or taxi. The city centre is walkable.
A swimsuit in summer for Palić, layers for the lakeside wind, and camera memory — the façades repay every angle.
The City Hall offers guided tours with lift access to the council hall; Palić promenade is flat and step-free.
