ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The San Giusto hill is the historic heart above the harbour — the acropolis of Roman Tergeste, now carrying the cathedral built into a Romanesque church whose facade is studded with Roman sarcophagi and carved spolia, a Baptistery, castle ruins and terraced belvederes over the city. It is the walk that ties ancient Trieste to its panorama: the cathedral, the lapidarium garden of broken Roman carving, the castle walls, and the whole Gulf laid out below.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Roman Tergeste crowned this hill with its temple and forum from the 1st century BC. The cathedral itself is a 14th-century merging of two earlier churches into one five-bay basilica; its facade reuses Roman reliefs and a huge medieval rose window. The castle beside it was raised by the Venetians in the 15th century and rebuilt under the Habsburgs; it was damaged by Allied bombing in 1944 and partly demolished, and its remains now hold a lapidarium and a small museum.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here

The mosaic floors of the early-Christian basilica inside the cathedral.
The San Giusto castle ruins, lapidarium and tempio mariano.
The belvedere terrace over the city, the port and the whole Gulf.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
San Giusto is where Trieste’s two thousand years stack in one place — Roman stones in a medieval facade above a Habsburg port — and the terrace gives the single best panorama of the city, best at golden hour.
